Demonstrating love & community to others.
Agape Pamoja is a non-profit organization that shows love and community to others. Agape is the Greek word for “love”. Pamoja is the Swahili word for “community” or “doing things together”. The purpose of Agape Pamoja is to help serve the multi-faceted needs of refugees from war-torn countries residing in Kansas City by providing housing assistance, educational support, food, clothing, community involvement, leadership development and other aid while intentionally doing life together.
In December 2016, we purchased our first Blessing House to assist a refugee family from the Democratic Republic of Congo. After 6 months of renovating this home with the support of more than 60 people who donated time, money, and furniture the family moved into their new home.! This family became our family, and over time, they adopted our group into their community. By the end of 2017, we had three Blessing Houses and, more importantly, three new families to build community & fellowship with! With strong support from our amazing community, Blessing House #4 was purchased in January 2018. More homes soon followed, with Blessing House #8 finishing in December 2018. We acquired Blessing House #14 in December 2019, followed by 8 more homes and then a 6-plex apartment building in June 2020!
Agape Pamoja became aware of another challenge the refugee community faced - finding affordable space for cultural events. This community is highly relational with many important social and cultural activities. However, they do not have access to affordable and usable space. Upon seeing this need, Agape Pamoja proceeded to find and purchase a space that our African community can use for their cultural activities, meetings, and social events
